Sparkling
Prosecco Valdobbiadene Brut Jeio Bisol NV - £8.40
90% Prosecco, 6% Pinot Bianco, 4% Verdiso
Brilliant Straw yellow and an extremely fine, vivacious mousse. Aromas of
wildflowers and almonds are balanced on the palate by notes of pear and a
refreshingly crisp acidity.
2008 Poire Granit, Chateau de Hauteville – Normandy (biodynamic) - £13.05
This pear champagne is utterly delicious! Made from small pears from
300+ year old pear trees and bottled fermented naturally (without filtration)
this is gloriously elegant, smooth and racy. The perfect aperitif, great with crepes,
pan-fried scallops or simple pork dishes, this perry can be also be drunk with
runny cheeses and most desserts. (Only 3% abv!)
Champagne Philipponnat Royale Reserve NV Brut - £27.55
Very fine champagne from a family estate renowned for having perhaps
the final single vineyard in the Champagne region. Gold with fine persistent
mousse it reveals aromas of citrus and red fruits and notes of delicately
yeasty fresh bread. In the mouth the wine is smooth and well-structured
with a flicker of lime on the attack unfolding into a richer palate of red
fruits and apples.
White
2008 Bergerie de Bastide, Vin de Pays de Mediterranee – Southern France £5.00
Dry, warm and herbal white made from Grenache Blanc with a little
Sauvignon and Ugni. Easy-drinking style, enjoyable by itself, simple seafood or salads.
2007 Grecanico, Caruso & Minini – Sicily £6.90
Aromatic and stunningly structured, the fruit has a faint echo of fresh toffee.
The nose is reminiscent of orange blossom, but the palate is more rounded l
ike the flesh of a pear. Excellent with sea bass or roasted veg.
2008 Petit Bourgeois, Domaine Henri Bourgeois – Loire £8.25
Petit Sancerre by any other name, this excellent, crisp Sauvignon comes from
vineyards just a few yards outside the Sancerre appellation. Flower and fruit
fragrances: elderflower and mange-tout notes, very fresh fruit, but also
good weight. Most kinds of fish and classically with goat’s cheese.
2007 Chablis, Domaine Colette Gros – Burgundy £11.75
Classic Chablis with a clear light gold colour, glinting with emerald green.
In the mouth the wine is dry as apple-parings and steely with perhaps just
a delicate hint of violets and mint. Well balanced with lively acidity, the
mouth presents notes of hazelnut and biscuits which add a certain charm
and length to the finish. A natural partner of shellfish. Try with chalky
goat’s cheese.
Rose
2007 Domaine de Tamary Rose, Cuvee Elegance - Cotes de Provence £8.35
The spirit of Provence, pale, crystalline and limpid. The nose is pretty,
unveiling floral aromas of bergamot and sweet jasmine as well as bouquet
of exotic and red berry fruits, whilst the palate picks up notes of mango
and lychee with a more savoury edge of peach-stone and citrus. This
winery will be biodynamic next year.
Red
2008 Bergerie de Bastide Rouge, Vin de Pays de Mediterranée – Southern France £5.00
Plummy, soft blend of Grenache Noir, Cinsault and Merlot. Velvety
red cherry in the mouth, round, ripe tannins.
2007 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Frentano, Cantina Sociale di Frentana – Abruzzo £5.95
Dark and full-bodied Montepulciano with a big gush of prunes, plums,
dark cherries and a dry peppery-spicy finish to keep it in check.
Wonderfully characterful red: ideal with pasta with meatballs, and belly of pork.
2007 Garnacha Vinas Viejas, Bodegas Solar de Urbezo – Spain £7.95
Intense cherry red colour, aromas of red and black fruits, raspberries,
blackberries, cherries and plums. A pleasure to drink by itself or with
ham or beef dishes.
2007 Cotes du Rhone, Domaine Ferme Saint-Martin – Rhone (organic) £7.65
Delicious youthful southern Rhone red made from 80% Grenache and
20% Cinsault. This is a wine very much on the fruit with soft confit fruits
and a gentle dusting of pepper. A natural partner with lamb.
2006 Chianti Colli Senesi, Vittoria Innocenti – Tuscany (organic) £9.30
Lovely meaty-gamey style of Sangiovese (with some Canaiolo Toscano)
with flavours of spicy ripe cherries, roasted herbs, leather and liquorice.
A match made in heaven with roast pork.
2006 Givry Rouge “Champ Nalot”, Domaine Parize– Burgundy £14.70
Delicious primary aromas of spiced cherries, berries and rhubarb,
notes of clove and cigarbox, lovely refinement. Delicious with grilled
pork chops, pheasant or partridge in season or cow’s milk cheeses.
Sweet
2006 Banyuls Rimage, Les Clos de Paulilles – Roussillon – 50cl £9.75
Very much on the fruit with summer pudding flavours of berries,
notes of mocha and coffee, dried herbs, prune and caramel.
Great with cheese, good with light chocolate desserts, fruit
pastries and savoury dishes. Serve lightly chilled.
2005 Jurancon Magendia de Lapeyre – Pyrenees, South West France – 37.5cl (organic) - £10.60
The sublime expression of sweet fruit: mangoes, coconut, grapefruit
and banana bound by crystal-pure acidity. Magical as an aperitif, perfect
with foie gras or anything rich, and simply delicious with white peaches.
Works beautifully also with ewe’s cheese and most especially blue cheese.
